The camp in Gjadër remains suspended, Italy discusses 'rescue plans'

During the weekend, the social workers in the refugee camp in Gjadër returned home. According to "La Repubblica", in Gjadar they stayed alone seven employee of "Medihospes", the governing body of the Italian Centers in Albania for the repatriation of immigrants.

The Italian Ministry of the Interior emphasizes that the staff has been reduced and will change according to the needs of the moment. But despite the failure, apparently, the Italian government is unable to accept it publicly.

"The model has been defined. We will not back down. We are expecting the Supreme Court's decision on our appeals soon," the Italian Ministry of the Interior continued in its response.

The Italian newspaper "Il Tempo" reported that the Meloni government is thinking of a backup "Plan B", that the Gjadri camp will be turned into a prison where Albanians serving their sentences in Italy will be sent.

However, this seems difficult to achieve, if not impossible.

"A constitutional decision was made that the camp is only for that function and the law only provides for that function. Everything is possible here, but it is impossible!" migration expert Eda Gemi analyzed for Citizens.

According to Gemi, the Italian government will try to find a reason to reuse the camp in order not to call it a total failure, considering that millions of euros have been invested.

Thus, trannyports by sea on an Italian military ship with only 8 men that arrived in Albania last time cost €250,000, more than €31,000 for an asylum seeker on board.

"It was proven that the court in Italy is independent from politics! European law is above local law,” said Gemi, referring to the decision of the European Court of Justice, which forced Italy to take back the 24 immigrants they brought to Gjadër.

Gemi points out that this failure will also affect countries, which began to consider a similar plan, such as the right in the Netherlands with Geert Wilders, who questioned the fact that he could send Africans to Uganda who had been denied asylum in the Netherlands.

What is worrying for Gemi is related to the fact that Prime Minister Rama has created a constitutional precedent that is "dual jurisdiction decision" and that no one can undo.

"Tomorrow Rama will do it with another state, because the precedent has been set. It has some kind of impact not only for the specific case, but for any other similar case, where other agreements can be made to give the sovereignty of a certain piece of Albanian land to another state," Gemi concluded.

Meanwhile, it remains unclear what the "rescue plan" will be to give meaning to the millions invested by the Italian side.

What is being said for sure these days in Italy is the fact that the "Meloni-Rama" agreement is being qualified "epochal failure".

“The [Italian] government has failed knowing it would fail. They have spent a mountain of money and played with people's rights. This will go down in history as a shameful page for our country," said Elisabetta Piccolotti, MP for the Green and Left Alliance party in Italy.
