“Zëra”, Episode 4: Emirjon Senja analyzes the shaping of reality through Artificial Intelligence (AI)

In the fourth series of the fourth season of the podcast "Zëra", journalist Erisa Kryeziu discusses with journalist and media researcher Emirjon Senja the shaping of the reality we live in through the use of artificial intelligence.

The conversation addressed issues such as disinformation and how we should learn to recognize it and protect ourselves from it; how journalists and media workers can use AI without affecting the originality and ethics of information, and also brought up concrete cases where false photos or videos generated with AI have stood out in the public narrative.

Emirjon Senja, engaged for years as a journalist and expert in the media field, brings to the conversation a personal perspective regarding the use of AI, but also a general one when it comes to how we as citizens should access information today.

According to Senja, if earlier we were talking about manipulated photos, today we have videos with manipulated images and sound.

"I believe that the entire society is not yet ready to deal with this huge flow of information first, manipulated information second, and with this extraordinary potential that AI has, coupled with the potential that algorithms on social networks have to quickly target large audiences," Emirjon Senja expressed himself in the conversation on "Zëra".

According to him, with the use of AI, forms of disinformation have also become sophisticated, influencing decision-making, voting, or creating a false perception of a certain issue. For this reason, it is very important to doubt everything we read and watch.

"I always suggest making a short list of media outlets that you trust. Two media outlets, three media outlets," Emirjon Senja expressed.

According to Senja, we should share the information we have seen on social networks with what we have read in a certain media, whether on television or online.

"Not everything that appears on the screen is necessarily true. So we are no longer in the time I saw on television and that is true," Senja declared.

At a time when artificial intelligence has become an inseparable part, the media has an increased role in verifying information and clarifying it for the public.

"With the Media Institute, we have made a guideline on how content generated by artificial intelligence should be used, and one of the points is that the media must place a note on the photo or text when dealing with content produced by artificial intelligence," said Emirjon Senja on "Zëra".

Today, even the platforms themselves have adapted to technological developments.

"Even if the media today don't want to do this, the platforms themselves, the most recent case is META, the moment it perceives that an image, a piece of content was produced with AI, it doesn't allow you to publish it unless you make a note there that the image was produced with AI and notes this," brought to attention Senja.

Among journalists, the use of AI is now inevitable, but Senja sees it as a tool that helps in their work, requiring that the principles of ethics, transparency, and human oversight be respected.
